deron johnson - free to dance (lp)

RELEASE DATE: 06.28.24
CATALOG #: CF016
DIGITAL $10 | VINYL $27.99

Since the late 1980s, LA-based jazz keyboardist Deron Johnson has worked with everyone from Stanley Clarke to David Sanborn and Seal, not to mention a memorable stint and close collaboration with Miles Davis. Those brushes with some of music’s greatest talents laid the groundwork for Johnson’s new album, Free to Dance.

Recorded with producer Pete Min (Feist, The Strokes, Orville Peck) at his LA studio homebase, Lucy’s Meat Market, the collection of spellbinding, largely instrumental pieces came together in 10 improvised sessions.

“I would walk in and Pete would ask me ‘what do you want to jump on?’” laughs Johnson, who deftly danced across unusual instruments such as the Persian santur, gamelan strips, and tiny Tom Thumb piano. “Songs were birthed, then we chopped them up and moved pieces around. After that, we started thinking about our G.O.A.T.s that we wanted to have on the record.”

For Johnson, the current greatest of all time is tenor saxophonist Mark Turner, whose moody, breathy tone-floats curlicue three songs on Free to Dance. Other guests include hard-hitting drummers Mark Giuliana and Jonathan Pinson, flugelhorn player C.J. Camerieri, and in-demand saxophonist Sam Gendel.

Self-described as a “vessel,” Johnson continually seeks out fellow players who feel music flowing through them like water. On “Call Me Back,” that’s channeled through the tinny, gravelly voice of an answering machine from the Prince of Darkness himself. The effervescent centerpiece, “I Don’t Have To Wait For A Clear Day,” features Alan Hampton’s gorgeous vocals surrounded by spellbinding cycling pianos. This piece was partially inspired by vocalist Bernard Fowler’s work with neoclassical composer Philip Glass, and partially inspired by Johnson’s late mother.

“Alan only sang two lines,” Johnson explains. “It’s mainly an instrumental piece, so I just wanted a splash of something. That song is a nod to my mom who was really sick when I was making this record, and passed away near the end of it. One of her favorite jazz songs was ‘On A Clear Day (You Can See Forever).’ I wanted there to be a ‘Clear Day’ on this album, too.”

amy aileen wood - the heartening (lp)

RELEASE DATE: 05.03.24
CATALOG #: CF015
DIGITAL $10 | VINYL $27.99

Limited pressing of 500, 150g black vinyl, mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and manufactured by Record Industry Inc (RTI). Vinyl will ship in early 2025 and includes a digital download immediately after release.

Amy Aileen Wood is unaccustomed to the spotlight, which is very much by design. A calming presence in any room and a force behind the drum kit, Wood meshes her astute listening skills with an undeniable ownership of the music at hand, as illustrated in her work on Fiona Apple’s
2020 record Fetch The Bolt Cutters, which Wood co-produced.

When initially approached by Pete Min of Colorfield Records about collaborating on an album of her own, Amy was met with a mix of intrigue and abject terror. “My motivation was entirely fear based,” Wood explains, “I think my first question for Pete was, ‘are you sure?’ But it’s always good to get out of your comfort zone. And ultimately it was equal parts uncomfortable and rewarding.”

By harnessing those feelings of discomfort, Amy manages to create a lush soundscape rife with tension, release, curiosity and playful exploration on her debut release, The Heartening. Armed with little more than a cymbal bag, a bottle of wine, and a willingness to explore, Amy and Pete hunkered down in Min’s Los Angeles studio, Lucy’s Meat Market, for a series of experimental sessions in the spring and summer of 2023. The goal of those sessions? In Amy’s words, “to come in and be as unencumbered as possible.”

The resulting album features cameo appearances from Bolt Cutter brethren Fiona Apple, Sebastian Steinberg, and John Would, with guest work from Daphne Chen, Nicole McCabe, Wayne Whittaker, and Kelsey Wood. Drawing from such eclectic influences as 90s hip-hop and punk rock to artists like Floating Points and Brian Eno, The Heartening is a record steeped in subtle textures, unpredictable
twists and ear-turning instrumentation, a paradoxical listening experience that is at once both calming and chaotic.

Small Day is a collection of experiments in using the studio as an instrument. Each piece started as an improvisation and was collaged into a piece as it was stretched and cut into parts and layered upon.
I made this album with Pete Min at his studio at a time where I was searching for new palettes, sounds, and ways of composing. Getting to tinker with instruments and hardware I’d never touched resulted in a kind of exploration that got me away from the familiarity of the guitar which I play in many bands and for my own projects. I think the result is an album that snakes around in a playful way and holds
little surprises at every turn.”

rich hinman - memorial (lp)

RELEASE DATE: 11.10.23

Limited pressing of 500, 150g black vinyl, mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and manufactured by Record Industry Inc (RTI). Vinyl is available now and includes a digital download.

The new album Memorial from Rich Hinman came together in a way unlike anything the pedal steel guitarist has ever worked on. Frequently featured on other artists’ records (including work with k.d. lang, Sara Bareilles, Maren Morris, and Emily King), Hinman has developed a knack for taking a track and enhancing what’s already there. “It’s about bringing out more color, and presenting songs in the best possible light,” Hinman says.

Making Memorial, however, was an entirely different experience. “This music was created with minimal forethought,” says Hinman, “without the confining structures of a band, or any preconceived notion of what a ‘song’ is.” Hinman’s abilities as an instrumentalist became secondary to the mission of making something new and beautiful.

"The fascinating thing about instrumental music is that the emotional content is below the verbal water line," says Hinman. "It connects in a way that is by definition indescribable, even to the person making the music. The title of this record - 'Memorial' - suggests that to me; it's not a memorial for anyone or anything, but it feels the way a memorial feels to me, both mourning and celebrating at the same time."

Memorial features collaborations with Grammy-nominated drummer Mark Guiliana, bassist David Piltch, keyboardist Benny Bock, saxophonist Daniel Rotem, and the Section Quartet string quartet. "The Raising of a Large Barn” was arranged by fellow Colorfield artist, Brad Allen Williams.

anthony wilson - collodion (lp)

RELEASE DATE: 8.11.23
CATALOG #: CF012
DIGITAL $10 | VINYL LP $27.99

Limited pressing of 500, 150g black vinyl, mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and manufactured by Record Industry Inc (RTI). Vinyl is ready to ship and includes a digital download.

Collodion, the latest album of veteran guitarist and composer, Anthony Wilson, is 11 instrumental tracks brimming with sonic exploration and surprise, an electroacoustic experiment in which Wilson plays nearly all the instruments, with contributions from special guests Daniel Rotem (tenor saxophone), Anna Butterss (bass), Mark Guiliana (drums), Rob Moose (strings), Julien Knowles (trumpet), Jonah Levine (trombone).

The idea was to show up on a given day with nothing — no song, no charts, not even any instruments. What unfolded was a curious mix of improvisation, composition and production, all more or less simultaneously. The goal for each daylong visit was to have one piece largely completed.

“I never brought in a guitar of my own the whole time,” Wilson says. “The thought of doing things with instruments that I knew well, I just felt that wasn’t where I wanted to go. Pete [studio owner and producer on Collodion] has a couple great 335’s, beautiful old Martins in incredible condition, he’s got a gorgeous Jaguar, all kinds of stuff. If it was there, let’s plug it in. We just tried things. But it couldn’t be a traditional tone. We’d ask ourselves, ‘What does it need that will take it out of the realm of me just playing a guitar part?’ I tried to play in a way that wasn’t out of my hand habits, that wasn’t coming from the vocabulary I always play when I sit down to play. Automatically you go into the stuff you know. I was trying to be a little more uncoordinated and intuit ways of playing that could add to this other sonic thing that we were doing.”

“Collodion” is a viscous substance used in wet plate photography as well as theatrical makeup. When applied, it helps bring an image to life.

TRACKS: 1. Star Maiden / 2. Planetary Glide / 3. Keeping / 4. Arrival at Kanazawa / 5. Divine One / 6. Far Growing Nearer / 7. Dream Oracle / 8. Heart Whispering / 9. The Daughters of Night / 10. Collodion / 11. Muse of Joy

nora stanley & benny bock - distance of the moon (lp)

RELEASE DATE: 6.9.23
CATALOG #: CF011
DIGITAL $10 | VINYL LP $27.99

Limited pressing of 500, 150g black vinyl, mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and manufactured by Record Industry Inc (RTI). Vinyl is ready to ship and includes a digital download.

Distance of the Moon, Nora Stanley and Benny Bock’s first album together as a duo, is a deep journey into acoustic, electronic, and improvisatory realms. With a friendship dating back to high school in Berkeley, CA, the saxophone/ keyboard duo has been making music together for nearly a decade. Hikes through the Marin Headlands and Mt. Tam set the landscape for a long friendship that only deepened when the duo found themselves both living in Ohio, attending Oberlin Conservatory. Cross country road trips and weekend excursions through cornfields further solidified a connection both personal and musical that Nora and Benny have continued to build throughout the past four years, despite being situated on opposite coasts.

For their debut album, the two friends draw on a trove of shared musical, literary, and cinematic influences. Their connection to and love for the natural landscape of the San Francisco Bay Area is also present throughout the album, referenced in songs like “Into The Flats” and “Hawk Hill”, the latter, an homage to the late Pharaoh Sanders.

Distance of the Moon features the duo on a plethora of instruments, capturing a variety of textures and sounds from pump organ and prepared piano to Oberheim Four Voice synthesizer and baritone guitar. Featured guests include Abe Rounds, CJ Camerieri, Daphne Chen, Doug Stuart, Jacob Richards, Jeff Parker, Mark Giuliana, Myles Martin and Owen Clapp.

Nora and Benny draw influence from the duo recordings of Charlie Haden and Ornette Coleman as well as the playful and exploratory music of Argentinian composer Juana Molina. Other influences include LA artists Sam Gendel and Sam Wilkes, Keith Jarrett, Pharoah Sanders, composers such as Olivier Messiaen, Caroline Shaw, Arvo Part, and Indonesian Gamelan.

1. Hawk Hill / 2. Assembling / 3. Vista Ahead / 4. Maurice / 5. Interlude / 6. Into The Flats / 7. Like Smoke / 8. Peaches / 9. Two / 10. Distance of the Moon

daniel rotem - wave nature (lp)

DIGITAL $10 | VINYL LP $27.99

Limited pressing of 500, 150g black vinyl, mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and manufactured by Record Industry Inc (RTI). Vinyl is ready to ship and includes a digital download.

Saxophonist and composer, Daniel Rotem, designed his approach to Wave Nature like the sun diagrams he grew up studying. Almost rhizomatic in nature, one idea spurring another and each subsequent link existing in service to the root and a world of its own, the structure of Wave Nature is both tethered and free-floating.

“I view music as these different lines, and from listening you can come up with universes of thoughts, all these connections and associations. From one idea stem all these different things.”

Wave Nature is, at its core, an album of ideas sewn together, each note signaling and gesturing to something grander. “Seeing something grow in front of you is breathtaking,” Rotem explains. “There is nothing like a small sound and seeing–hearing–it become part of something bigger.”

brad allen williams - œconomy (lp)

Limited pressing of 500, 150g black vinyl, mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and manufactured by Record Industry Inc (RTI). Vinyl is ready to ship and includes a digital download.

On œconomy, Brad Allen Williams finds new creative potential in the guitar and explores the interstices between (and intersections of) jazz, neoclassical, and experimental music.

Perhaps the most intoxicating element of œconomy: recontextualization of the artist’s primary instrument manifests not as academic exercise, but as artistic springboard. It’s one thing to subvert tropes for novelty, but the grinding psychedelia of “Boomer” and restrained touches that accompany the fugue-like beauty of “Scape” serve excellent songwriting.

Like all Colorfield releases, œconomy was born from an improvisatory spirit that reflects the label’s mission. Expert performances by The Section Quartet and a few virtuosic cameos by drummer Mark Guiliana represent the only instruments not played by Williams himself.

TRACKS: 1. prelude to an artifice / 2. an artifice / 3. inner life / 4. pæan / 5. boomer / 6. tecnologia / 7. scape / 8. her sidebar (yield) / 9. œconomy / 10. halcyon

DIGITAL $10 | VINYL LP $27.99

Limited pressing of 500, 150g black vinyl, mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and manufactured by Record Industry Inc (RTI). Vinyl is ready to ship and includes a digital download.

Go Bozo, Amir Yaghmai’s debut solo album, is a brilliant blend of club-ready dance grooves and ambient explorations – a bit like hearing a Floating Points remix of Brian Eno’s Apollo. “Go Bozo” was Yaghmai’s mantra during the recording process, a reminder to stay instinctual and only give consideration to what he wanted to hear at any given moment. “If I'm helping someone else's vision take shape, what I’m playing is always very carefully considered and I take notes from people; it’s very collaborative,” Yaghmai explains. “When it comes to just something from nothing on my own, I was a novice.” While Yaghmai had a few touchstones in mind, collaborators like Feist and Nosaj Thing to help out on a few tracks, and a plethora of notes he’d sketched out, at the studio, he abandoned any plans; he showed up and simply played. The end result is propulsive yet deftly titrated, intuitively combining the experimentation of electronic music, the improvisatory qualities of jazz and stylistic cues of Middle Eastern, Eastern European and African folk music.

TRACKS: 1. Full Bozo Mode / 2. Bozo Beach / 3. Training Montague / 4. Go Bozo / 5. KRI / 6. Black Turtleneck (feat. Daniel Rotem) / 7. Special Price For Geeks / 8. KSA / 9. White Turtleneck / 10. Lamb & Tato

Limited pressing of 500, 150g black vinyl, mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and manufactured by Record Industry Inc (RTI). Vinyl is ready to ship and includes a digital download as soon as the album is released.

Between All Things is a world in which a sonic forest blooms simultaneously in all directions. OHMA's, Mia Garcia and Hailey Niswanger thoughtfully crafted the body of sound during 2021 to invoke a deep listening. The record begins with a meditative state, eliciting the openness of a journey unfolding. A gentle saxophone acts as the guide to enter the sphere, inviting the listener to become one with the sounds. With each moment new sonic doors are opened, evoking a multitude of emotions. Ranging from earthy bass tones and flowing flutes to analog synthesizers and vintage drum machines, the record provides a full range of the sonic spectrum. Each song on the album is entirely unique to itself but holds an essence of familiarity and timelessness, all of which contributes to the connection between all things. Integrating life’s rhythm, the pair recorded lakes, fire, leaves, and birds to collaborate with the orchestra of nature. Their process is experimental, always guided by play.

Anna Butterss’ Activities was born out of a chance studio invitation, a one-day session that slowly evolved into the encompassing, electro-acoustic opus she eventually crafted. Alongside her trusty co-producer and mixer, Pete Min (of Colorfield Records), the bassist turned-songwriter recruited collaborators Josh Johnson, Ben Lumsdaine, and Christian Euman to flesh out her compositions. These songs, created through a process of improvisation, processing and layering are deeply personal to Butterss, a collection of reflections on life in a foreign country, grief, and family.

On his debut album, Vanishing Act, keyboardist and composer Benny Bock conjures the contrasts of living in big city and small town environments, infusing ambient jazz and folkloric arrangements with bristling electronic urgency. Out of improvised recording sessions with producer/engineer Pete Min and a host of acclaimed musicians, Bock has created a spellbinding instrumental cycle, channeling the feelings of existing in these spaces of chaos or calm.

•• benny bock - “dynamo”

Filmed in 1972 by Richard Bock with a Bolex H8 in New York City. It was created entirely in the camera using single frame and multiple exposure techniques. The film, originally called "Retension," was left without a soundtrack for 50 years until Richard and Benny uncovered it looking for footage for a music video. The film seemed to fit the song "Dynamo" perfectly. The reel was digitally restored and transferred, creating a collaboration between Richard when he was 24 years old and his 24-year old son, 50 years later. With strings by Daphne Chen.

•• benny bock - “eight below zero”

“Eight Below Zero” is the first single off Benny’s Bock debut release, out 06.10.22 on Colorfield Records. On this song, Bock’s melancholy synths are accompanied by Rich Hinman on pedal steel, Abe Rounds on drums, CJ Camerieri on trumpet and flugelhorn, and Logan Kane on upright bass. “That song was written about a certain day where I had to say goodbye to a friend when it was literally eight degrees below zero in Ohio,” Bock says. “It was freezing. The title is also a nod to the Sonny Boy Williamson song ‘Nine Below Zero.’ There are some blues themes in there.” Video shot by Benny and his father in the Bay. Pre-order the album.

Mark Guiliana announces his latest full-length record, Music For Doing, out Jan 28th on Colorfield.

Like all Colorfield releases, Music For Doing was recorded at Lucy’s Meat Market in Eagle Rock, CA, in sessions that emphasized improvisation and sonic exploration. Each song on the record started from a blank slate, only to find its full form by day's end.

Music For Doing is not a typical drum record. While built on an undeniable rhythmic foundation, the songs of Music for Doing are wildly variegated. "Song for Making Things Right," the album's intro track, is a moody tune balancing between scattering drums and a squelchy low end, slowly building to an 80’s inspired synth breakdown. Guiliana’s latest single "Song for Investigating Consciousness" is a wild and winding tune featuring David Binney on sax and Daphne Chen on violin. Unexpected instruments and electronic sonic experiments reign throughout the LP.

CREATIVE EXPLORATION AND TRUST IN SELF is the point of departure for Abraham Rounds’ current project, “The Confidence to Make Mistakes”, a snapshot of a performance based in improvisation. With a goal to find unselfconscious freedom, Abe’s first solo EP represents a moment of unapologetic self-expression through percussion, drums and vocals. Asked what compels his courage in creativity, Abe credits his family. He was raised by strong, supportive women and his father is renowned Sydney musician/producer Victor Rounds. It is also impossible not to look back at his ancestry, with elders from many corners of the globe, including Fiji, Tonga, Hungary, and Iraq. The courage to go where his own heart led is what prompted Abe to hit record and capture 22 minutes of musical truth.
